Don't Mention "Hi-De-Hi" !

An amazing person who continues to show the spirit of Butlins and the Redcoats. Here is a description from the publisher;

"The 1982 summer season at Butlins Ayr was over. For Terry McFadden, life couldn't be any better. Those few months did not just change him as a person - they also changed his life.

He had just finished working in his dream job as a Butlins Redcoat, where he closed the door on his childhood life, received a major boost to his confidence, and found the love of his life, kitchen assistant Angie Bierman. For the 1983 season, they are both back as Redcoats. Last year, their lives change, will their lives change again."

What time does Midnight Cabaret Start?

Mr Mcgroarty continues to shares his experiences with Butlins with another book, here is the description from the publisher:

"Working at Butlins took on a whole new meaning. Suddenly Butlins became the best place in the world."

"Eighteen-year-old Terry McFadden is stuck on the dole with nowhere to go. Plagued by crippling shyness, he doesn't have the confidence to do anything, unless it was performing on stage or on the ballroom dance floor. But that wasn't going to get him a job."

An Illustrated History of Butlins

For over seventy-five years, Butlin's have been entertaining families of all ages. Billy Butlin opened his first holiday camp in Skegness in 1936 and continued to expand with camps at Clacton, Ayr, Pwllheli, Bognor Regis, Mosney, Minehead and Barry Island. In post-war Britain, families could enjoy a holiday at Butlin's for the equivalent of a week's wage. Their slogan was 'Our True Intent is all for Your Delight'. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of people visited Butlin's and many have wonderful memories of the friendly redcoats, the funfair rides, roller skating, boating, the talent contests and the beauty pageants.

Butlin's 80 Years of Fun!

In 1936, with the opening of his first holiday camp in Skegness, Billy Butlin laid the foundations for a new era in the history of the British seaside. Today, his legacy still lives on as Butlin's celebrates its 80th year as an iconic British institution.

The Nation's Host charts the incredible inside story of Butlin's, from its origins in a British society still reeling from the economic downturn of the 1920s, to its heyday in the mid-twentieth century and the challenges posed by the arrival of overseas package holidays. Lavishly illustrated throughout with timeless images from the Butlin's archives, many of which have never been seen before, this is a unique insight into the history of a company long synonymous with the British seaside holiday.

From Butlins to Beijing

This entertaining memoir covers Brian’s pre-war rural Norfolk life involved with farming, football, National Service, photography, and palmistry. Then desperate adventures at sea, acting, ice cream selling, chef, and property development in Spain. The early offshore oil industry, conferences and exhibitions in China in the 1980’s and organising golf events in which he is still involved.

The Toff at camp

The Toff (the ‘Honourable Richard Rollison’) is in disguise as a helper at a holiday camp. He has been hired to pose undercover in order to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three male entertainers, or ‘Red Coats’ as they are known within the camp. He is assisted by the beautiful Liz Cherrell, another employee, who also features on various advertising posters being used by the camp. The mystery deepens as hidden money is found and there is plenty of action as fights break out and then murder. The Toff finds himself embroiled in a much bigger plot than anyone imagined, leading to a fitting climax at an airfield away from the camp.
