During the Somerwest World era of Butlin's Minehead, you would see the Malones bar/club and what a wonderful location and design this was. I have extremely high memories of both my nans (Pauline Sainsbury and Violet Banks) at this location.
In the '90s of Butlin's Somerwest World, the current owner Rank had made a bold move to relocate the funfair to the front of the camp and with that, the go-karts. This white fenced area of the camp/resort is the former location of the funfair. It was being used as a car park in 2010. If you look closer, you can see that there is a building here also. As you arrived in Minehead Butlins, you would see the characters of Butlins on the outside of this wall, one Minehead's side. The building had the first aid, offices and the repair/storage area for the go-karts. Today, the layout of the go-kart track is gone and is now a part of the road for the car park and the building is no longer at the site.
During the holiday worlds era of Butlin's, a lot of customers would complain saying that they were unsure where to go to find their chalet or room. To help with this confusion, Butlins (under rank ownership) had developed a cleaver system in place. An easy way to use and find your way around. Here was the idea, your village would have a symbol attached to it. On the floor, these symbols would be shown to you. By following these symbols on the floor, you would come across the villiage you were staying in. On the side of the buildins would be these symbols. In this photo, you can see it twice. The first one is the large circle that has been painted over. The second is in the letter Q, which kept its circle. This symbol system did remain for some time, however its discontinued today.
The building to the right-hand side is no longer here in today's Butlin's. It use to host the stores at the bottom and in 1999, had rooms upstairs for staff to sleep in, similar to chalet rooms. I remember coming here to get my uniform at the time and having a lot of memories of the building. It was quite sad and continues to be for me to see it long gone. Today (as of 2022) it's a garden area with a small playing area.
