Remembering Barry Island Butlins

Barry Island Butlin's has an extremely important part to play in the history of the timeline. It was at this location that Billy Butlin would create the idea of the legacy of the Butlins camps. Having been locked out of his B and B for the day as the landlady was out and about, he had a good think about why this is no one and how it could be different. That is when Butlin's holiday camp idea started, and from there it expanded until the year 1966 when Billy Butlin opened his final camp at the location the idea started.

The smallest of them all, the camp would be based at Nell's point and featured the triple-decker accommodation. However, the owner at the time, Rank Organisation, had decided that the camp was not going to fit their new plans for Butlin's Holiday Worlds. However, it's interesting to note that originally, there were plans for this to happen however, a last-minute decision sealed its future as the gate closed as a Butlins for the last time in 1986.  Butlin's was to now be represented with only Pwllheli in Wales.

However, the fun and the meaning of the camp did not stop there as on the 23rd of May 1987, it reopened its gates once again to the name of Majestic Holidays.  The new company named Majestic Holidays, continued to use the Redcoats until 1989 when they changed to Blue coats. The story of this former campsite had come to an end when the owners, now known as Insurebowls Ltd, had decided that the cost of repairs and the entertainment licence likely to not be approved was too much as they permanently closes the gates.  The Vale of Glamorgan council had then purchased the site in 1997, which was then sold to Bovis Homes. The last parts of what remained as Barry Island Butlins were demolished by 2005. Today, a blue plaque is on the location to remember the former Butlins camp.

Who and What is Butlin's Memorabilia Website

Mark Banks owns and created this website to show his collection of Butlin's memorabilia items. It was created during my spare time at work and is a hobby of mine and has since grown into a site that offers a chance for others to smile. This website is NOT the official website for Butlin's and is NOT the official archive of Butlin's at any stage. The website has expanded to show stories, with permission from that person, of a moment in Butlin's from people who are either a customer or former staff. This website is in loving memory of all that had come to this amazing company and to Sir William Butlin, the founder.  This website also has information about research regarding Butlin's history with information obtained from the research I made, which is not official.

The Untold Stories of Butlin's

The website has expanded to now include an area called "Untold Stories of Butlin's". These stories have been added to the site by a member of my group who has shared their moment at Butlin's. These stories are not from the official company and are from the person it represent, as shown on the page. The stories shared are from that person's memory and show the magic of Butlin's on how it creates that special moment.

If you are not official, who is Mark?

Butlin's Memorabilia is NOT the official website for Butlins. This site is also NOT the official website for the archive of Butlin's. The owners of Butlin's, Butlin's company, and Butlins.com have NOT approached me to design this site. They have no involvement with the development of the website or with the information that is shown. I am extremely thankful that they allow me to continue showing you their company's rich history.

The number one website for Butlins is always, www.butlins.com where you see all the information about booking a break.
