Did you know? The Prince's building originally had the first chapel of Butlins Minehead. It was closed with a new church built within the camp, which remains as of 2023.

Showing the heated outside swimming pool with the iconic Butlins fountain and umbrellas. The building showing pure beauty is the Gaiety building. The Gaiety Theater was within this building until the 1990s. It was then converted in 1999 into Hotshots. Today, you would be looking at the rear of the Pavilion stage, however, if you go around that, you would see the arcade and the entrance to Hotshots.

This photo represents Butlins in the very early years as you will notice that the Stadium building is not found or the Monorail train. The photo above is showing after this one, meaning this is older despite the postmark date. It was often for publishers to reuse photos from different years to show Butlin's areas.

The Butlin's Minehead nursery was originally named the Infants Centre and would have a romper room with a children's theatre. It was later named the Nursery Centre. Around the '80s, the Nursey would expand its name to "The Nursery Centre and Night-owl Service". In the holiday world's era of Butlins, this would change once more to the name Nursery, Night Owl Service and Rainbow Trail. Sadly the Nursey was closed to the customers however, it did continue for the use of staff children.

Known as the gaiety green, this was once used as putting greens (as shown in this photo). The Gaiety green has had little changes made to it with a small hill added towards the end. This location has also seen the BBC Radio One roadshow. It has also seen the circus and other activities over the years.

An important postcard in my collection as it shows Butlin's Minehead in the very early years. You will see the double-decker accommodations behind the main reception. There is no Monorail train in place and no cable cars, showing how young Butlins Minehead is at the time this was taken.

An early photo of Butlin's Minehead showing you the Prince's building without the Stadium (also known as the Beachcomber) building next to it.  You will also see that there are no cable cars or Monorail train/track in place. The lake at the front remained in place until the early 90s when it was converted into the funfair area.

The Ski Slope in Butlins Minehead was found at the rear of the camp. Going around it would have been the first location of the Miniature train. As you can see in the photo, the cable car exit and entrance are shown. The chalets shown here are the yellow camp. As of 2023, if you stood here, you would be in the caravans looking at the supermarket and Oyster Bay.

It was known as the water skiing lake and is found at the rear of the Butlins Minehead camp. In the 1980s, this area was renamed Angling Lake and was a part of the sports fields. This area would also include helicopter flights. In the mid-80s, the lake was renamed once again as the Wild Fowl Lake. Towards the Holiday Worlds era, the lake would be renamed again to Lakeside with caravans being added to the area. A pub was built near the lake called the Highway Man.  Today (as of 2023), you would see the caravans with the Highway Man pub behind you. The lake was used for fishing and as far as I am aware, that remains to be the case today.

Who and What is Butlin's Memorabilia Website

Mark Banks owns and created this website to show his collection of Butlin's memorabilia items. It was created during my spare time at work and is a hobby of mine and has since grown into a site that offers a chance for others to smile. This website is NOT the official website for Butlin's and is NOT the official archive of Butlin's at any stage. The website has expanded to show stories, with permission from that person, of a moment in Butlin's from people who are either a customer or former staff. This website is in loving memory of all that had come to this amazing company and to Sir William Butlin, the founder.  This website also has information about research regarding Butlin's history with information obtained from the research I made, which is not official.

The Untold Stories of Butlin's

The website has expanded to now include an area called "Untold Stories of Butlin's". These stories have been added to the site by a member of my group who has shared their moment at Butlin's. These stories are not from the official company and are from the person it represent, as shown on the page. The stories shared are from that person's memory and show the magic of Butlin's on how it creates that special moment.
