The icon of Butlins - The Chalets

The chalets of Butlin's are more than a place to eat, sit or sleep. The meaning behind them is what makes them so very special as they explain a story. With only one single gem available to view in England (Skegness Resort), you can see how much has changed in design and what is expected by the customers. Then you see the developments from single units to single deckers, then double deckers and finally onto triple deckers at Barry Island/Skegness.

Today, Butlin's chalet designs have changed greatly and still continue to tell the story of an era that is no more. In Minehead, we have the single-deckers that tell us the story of the start of the camp. Then you go further in and see the double-deckers on each side of the dining room, telling you the story of another time in Minehead. Now fast forward into the future, and you see the new builds by Rank at the location called Oyster Bay (Exmoor village)....however, only those on the right (going towards the supermarket). However, if you look to the left, you see the newly updated ones that represent the Bourne Leisure Limited era.

Now walk to the supermarket and look behind to see the old Quantocks, which were the original first self-catering units. Look to the right-hand side and you see the Lakeside and Bayside chalets, which are brand new to the resort. Just think, that is just Minehead as Pwllheli and AYR Haven (as of 2022) still have Butlins chalets on their resort telling a story of a moment no more.

Below are some selections available for you to see more and I do hope you enjoy this area of Butlin's Memorabilia website.

Who and What is Butlin's Memorabilia Website

Mark Banks is the individual responsible for the creation and ownership of this website, which showcases his collection of Butlin's memorabilia. It was developed in my spare time after work as a hobby and has since grown into a platform that brings joy to others. It is important to note that this website is independent from Butlin's and is not an official archive of the company. Furthermore, it includes stories, with the consent of the individuals involved, that recount memorable moments at Butlin's from both customers and former staff members. This website pays homage to the esteemed company and its founder, Sir William Butlin. Additionally, it provides information on the history of Butlin's, based on personal research.
